A few months ago, the latest version of macOS was released - macOS Catalina (10.15). ILT recommends updating to Catalina due to the many security & feature benefits it contains.
To update your Mac...
1. Open Self Service. You can do this by either clicking on the dark blue crest in the dock, or if you don't see it there, searching your Mac by pressing Command + Spacebar, then pressing the return (enter) key once you've found Self Service.
2. Once you've opened Self Service, click on the Install button below the Install macOS Catalina policy. It should show under the featured page, but if you don't see it, you can search for it by using the search bar in the upper-left-hand corner of the Self Service window.
3. This download may take a while, so it is recommended you do this at a time when you can leave your computer open and downloading for a while, such as at home when you aren't using it or during lunchtime.
4. Once the macOS Catalina installer has downloaded, you can update by browsing to the Applications folder on your Mac. In the Applications folder, you will see a new app/installer called Install macOS Catalina. Double-click on it to open it.
5. Once open, the Catalina installer will ask you to continue. You will be prompted to Continue or Agree a few times. Simply follow the prompts to complete the installation.
It is also important that you save any unsaved documents or work that you may have open before continuing!
6. Your computer will restart to a black screen with an Apple logo & progress bar. This part of the installation usually takes around 45 minutes to complete. Do not restart or turn off your Mac during this time.
7. Once you've completed the installation, your computer will restart to the login screen. From here, you will need to login, then you will be prompted with some last setup instructions such as iCloud & Siri. The longer it has been since you last updated, the more prompts you'll get.
Once you've completed all of these steps, you're done!
